Kids dance program
One school, every style your child could want
Croft Gilchrist School of Dancing is Townsville's most established dance school for children, teaching since 1971. From a toddler's first plié to a senior student's vocational examination, our qualified teachers guide kids through properly structured syllabi — Royal Academy of Dance ballet, ADA jazz and tap, Acrobatic Arts, contemporary and hip hop — in caring, age-grouped classes.
Why kids thrive dancing with us
Children build technique, confidence and lifelong friendships in our supportive studio environment. Classes are grouped by age and experience so beginners feel welcome and advanced students stay challenged. Along the way kids can sit formal exams, join our eisteddfod work, perform in the annual concert — or simply dance for the joy of it.
Our purpose-built studios at 36 French St, Pimlico have professional sprung timber floors, full-length mirrors and barres, so young bodies train safely from day one.

How classes grow with your child
Whatever age your child starts, there's a level waiting for them:
- Tiny Tots / Dance with Me (ages 2–4, with a parent or carer) — play-based ballet and movement. See the Tiny Tots page.
- Pre-Primary and Primary (ages 4–7) — structured syllabus entry in ballet, plus the Rhythm & Dance jazz/tap combo.
- Junior grades (ages 7–12) — graded RAD ballet, ADA jazz and tap examinations, hip hop, contemporary, acro and Highland.
- Teens — senior and vocational streams, eisteddfod and performance preparation. See the Teen Dance page.
- Grown-ups at the studio — parents can train too in our adult classes.
Exams, eisteddfods and the annual concert
Kids who want formal goals can sit RAD ballet examinations and ADA jazz/tap examinations with external examiners, and join our eisteddfod performance work. Every student is also invited to perform in our much-loved annual concert — often the highlight of a young dancer's year.
When and where do kids' classes run?
Kids' classes run Monday to Saturday at our Pimlico studios, with Saturday mornings covering tiny tots, primary and junior sessions, and weekday afternoons covering the older grades. See the full timetable for exact days and times.
Frequently asked questions about kids' classes
What age can my child start dancing?
From 2 years old in our parent-participation Tiny Tots / Dance with Me class, and from 4 years old in structured syllabus classes. Most children begin formal training somewhere between 4 and 7.
How do I choose the right style for my child?
Ballet is the foundation for almost every dance style, while jazz and tap suit kids who love rhythm and energy, and hip hop or acro suit kids who want a faster pace. Book a trial and we'll help you find the right fit.
Are there family discounts on fees?
Yes — we offer family discounts and reduced multi-class rates for students taking more than one style. See the fees page for current pricing.
Can my child try a class before we commit?
Absolutely. We encourage a free trial class so your child can meet the teacher and try the studio before you enrol. Contact us to arrange one.
