Hip hop for juniors, teenagers and adults
Croft Gilchrist School of Dancing offers hip hop in Townsville across three dedicated streams — Junior, Teenage and Adult. From isolations and grooves to full performance routines, our hip hop classes are high-energy, musical and confidence-building, taught in our purpose-built Pimlico studios with music kids actually love.
Why hip hop is such a confidence builder
Hip hop is high-energy, musical and hugely fun — and it's a serious workout too. Dancers build cardio fitness, posture and coordination while learning rhythm, timing and stage-worthy performance skills. Because the focus is on attitude and energy as much as perfect technique, hip hop is one of the best styles for shy or reluctant dancers to grow real confidence, both in class and on stage.
Our studios at 36 French St, Pimlico have sprung timber floors that keep jumps and grooves easy on growing joints.
Hip hop levels taught at Croft Gilchrist
Classes are grouped by age so everyone moves with dancers their own level:
- Junior Hip Hop — fun, high-energy classes for school-aged kids covering grooves, simple routines and foundational hip hop moves.
- Teenage Hip Hop — sharper technique, longer routines and performance-quality choreography for high-school-aged dancers.
- Adult Hip Hop — a fun, beginner-friendly evening class that doubles as a great cardio workout. No experience needed.
Routines, performance and progression
Hip hop isn't exam-based — instead, classes focus on learning and performing routines. Students progress by mastering foundational moves like isolations, bounce, rock and footwork, then layering them into full choreography. Routines are refreshed regularly so dancers are always working toward something new, with age-appropriate music and content chosen carefully for juniors and teens.
When and where do hip hop classes run?
Hip hop classes run on weekday afternoons and evenings at our Pimlico studios, with Junior and Teenage classes after school and Adult sessions in the evening. See the full timetable for exact times.
Frequently asked questions about hip hop classes
Is hip hop right for my child?
If your child can't stop moving when the music's on, hip hop will be a great fit. It's energetic, musical and confidence-boosting, and our Junior classes keep content age-appropriate. It's also a great first style for kids who find more formal dance styles a bit serious.
What music do hip hop classes use?
We use current, upbeat music that students genuinely enjoy, always screened to keep lyrics and themes appropriate for the age group. Juniors and teens learn to move to the kind of tracks they hear on the radio and in dance videos.
Are adult hip hop classes beginner-friendly?
Very. Adult Hip Hop is one of our most popular evening classes precisely because it's welcoming to absolute beginners. The routines are achievable, the atmosphere is relaxed, and you'll get a great workout regardless of experience.
What should I wear to hip hop class?
Comfortable clothing you can move in — a t-shirt with shorts, joggers or leggings — and clean sneakers with good support. No special shoes required, which makes hip hop one of the easiest styles to trial.
