Adult dance program
Dance is for every age — and every body
It is never too late to start dancing. Croft Gilchrist School of Dancing runs dedicated adult classes in ballet, jazz, tap and hip hop, from gentle beginner sessions through to advanced adult ballet. You'll learn real technique in a relaxed, supportive room full of adults who started exactly where you are now.
Why adults dance with us
Dancing as an adult improves fitness, coordination, posture, balance and confidence — and it's a genuinely enjoyable way to move with music and meet people. Because our teachers are fully qualified in the RAD and ADA syllabi, adults learn correct technique, not just a dance-fit routine, and progress is real and measurable over the term.
Classes run at our purpose-built Pimlico studios with professional sprung floors that are kind to adult joints.
Adult classes taught at Croft Gilchrist
Six adult-dedicated classes run through the week:
- Adult Ballet Beginner (evenings) — the fundamentals of classical ballet with no prior experience needed.
- Adult Ballet Advanced (evenings) — for adults with solid prior training who want a genuine technical workout.
- Adult Beginner Ballet (mornings) — a daytime beginner session for shift workers, retirees and parents after drop-off.
- Adult Jazz — upbeat, musical classes to the ADA syllabus.
- Adult Tap — rhythm and coordination at an adult pace, beginner-friendly.
- Adult Hip Hop — relaxed, energetic street styles for grown-ups.
Fitness or technique? Both.
Some adults join for fitness and mobility; others are returning to a childhood love of dance and want proper training. Either way you get both: every class is taught with correct technique by qualified teachers, while the low-impact, music-driven movement builds strength, posture and flexibility week by week.
When do adult classes run?
Adult ballet beginner and advanced sessions run Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings, with an extra morning beginner ballet session through the week and adult jazz, tap and hip hop spread across the timetable. See the full timetable and our fees page for details.
Frequently asked questions about adult classes
I haven't danced since childhood — can I still join?
Absolutely. Our beginner streams assume zero current technique, and many of our adult students are returning to dance after ten, twenty or even forty years away. You'll be in good company.
Are these fitness classes or technique classes?
Both. Classes teach real RAD- and ADA-informed technique with qualified teachers, but the movement itself is excellent low-impact fitness. Many adults come for fitness and stay for the technique.
Do I need a uniform or special shoes?
No uniform — comfortable activewear is perfect. For ballet, proper soft ballet shoes help once you're settled, and our on-site Townsville Dancewear Centre can fit you. For tap, any hard-soled shoe will do to start.
What if I have injuries or limited mobility?
Let your teacher know before class and they'll adapt positions and ranges to suit. Sprung floors and careful warm-ups make our adult classes friendly to most bodies — but check with your health professional if you're unsure.
